Why AI Gets Your Restaurant Hours Wrong (And How to Fix It)

AI assistants often tell customers the wrong hours, stale menu prices, and bad Sunday info. Here's why restaurants are uniquely exposed and what to fix first.

Restaurants get a worse deal from AI assistants than almost any other local business type. A plumber's core information — phone number, service area, rough pricing — stays stable for months. A restaurant's hours shift for holidays, brunch service kicks in on weekends, the soup changes daily, and Sunday might look nothing like Tuesday. AI assistants are not built for that kind of volatility.

When a customer asks ChatGPT "Is Marco's Pizzeria open Sunday evening?", the model answers from whatever it last ingested — often a Google Business Profile snapshot, a Yelp listing, or a web scrape from a year ago. If Marco changed his Sunday close time from 9 pm to 7 pm six months ago and only updated it on his Facebook page, the AI answers with the wrong time. The customer shows up. Nobody wins.

Why restaurant information ages faster

Most local businesses change their hours once a year, if that. Restaurants change them constantly: holiday closures, summer patio hours, a slow Monday that becomes a dark day, a new Saturday brunch slot.

Each change creates a window where the AI has correct data on one source and outdated data on another. Because AI models blend signals from multiple places, a restaurant with inconsistent listings across Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and its own website is almost certain to generate a wrong answer at some point. Understanding why this happens is the first step toward fixing it.

The Sunday problem

Sunday is uniquely dangerous for restaurants in AI search results, for three reasons.

Different hours. Many restaurants close earlier on Sunday, open later for brunch, or run a limited menu. These nuances often exist only in a "Special hours" field in Google Business Profile — which gets less AI attention than the primary hours block.

Seasonal changes. Summer Sunday brunch? Off after Labor Day. AI models trained before the change will confidently state the wrong schedule to customers asking months later.

Closed-Monday pattern confusion. Many restaurants are dark on Mondays and treat Sunday as a de facto Friday. AI models sometimes misread the pattern and treat Sunday as a rest day even when it is the busiest shift of the week.

A customer typing "Sunday brunch near me" into an AI assistant and landing at a closed restaurant is a lost visit, a 1-star review, and a customer who probably does not come back.

Menu accuracy is the hidden problem

AI assistants increasingly answer menu questions directly: dietary restrictions, price ranges, whether a dish is vegetarian, whether corkage is allowed.

"Does Gina's Bistro have gluten-free pasta?" is a question ChatGPT will attempt to answer. If Gina added gluten-free options last spring but her menu page has not been crawled since, the AI says no. A gluten-intolerant diner picks somewhere else.

Price accuracy works the same way. If your prix-fixe jumped from $45 to $55 and only the physical menu reflects it, AI will quote the old price — setting up a bad experience before the customer even sits down.

The practical standard: your website's menu page needs to be the single source of truth, updated every time a price or dish changes, and structured so that crawlers can read it. PDFs do not count. A scanned image definitely does not count.

What AI actually sources for restaurant queries

The typical lookup chain for a restaurant question goes:

  1. Google Business Profile (hours, phone, address, cuisine type)
  2. Structured review platforms (Yelp, TripAdvisor, OpenTable)
  3. The restaurant's own website (menu page, About page)
  4. Food media mentions and aggregators (often old)

Conflicts between these sources are common. Google says open until 10 pm; the website says 9 pm; Yelp says 9:30 pm based on user-submitted corrections from two years ago. The AI averages or picks — unpredictably.

Adding structured data to your website's homepage and menu page puts your version of the facts ahead of aggregator guesswork. These are the fields most likely to generate wrong AI answers for a restaurant:

  • Sunday hours — check Google, Yelp, and your website. All three should match exactly.
  • Holiday closures — add them to Google Business Profile as special hours before the holiday, not after.
  • Menu prices — if you have an HTML menu page, keep it current. Convert PDFs to readable text.
  • Dietary tags — explicitly state gluten-free, vegan, halal, or kosher options in readable text on the page, not just as icons.
  • Reservation policy — "walk-ins only" or "reservations required" belongs on the homepage, not buried inside a booking widget.
