If you run an affiliate or review site, your traffic model has a new gatekeeper. When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what's the best CRM for freelancers," the AI composes one answer from a handful of sources — and either your comparison post is in that handful or it earns nothing. AI citation tracking means measuring, per article, whether AI systems actually use your content when the buying questions get asked.
Brand-level tracking isn't enough
Most GEO tools answer "does AI know my brand?" That's the wrong resolution for a content site. Your money isn't in the brand — it's in individual articles: the "best VPN for travel" post, the "Notion vs Obsidian" comparison. Two articles on the same site routinely have opposite AI fates: one cited in every Perplexity answer, its sibling invisible. Brand-level numbers average that into mush. You need the article-level view: citation rate per URL, per question, per engine.
How to audit your citation rate by hand
- List your money articles — the 10–20 posts that drive affiliate revenue.
- Write the buyer question each one targets. Not the keyword — the question: "what's the best budget standing desk," "is NordVPN worth it."
- Ask Perplexity each question and record whether your article appears in the citations. Perplexity shows sources directly, which makes it the best debugging engine.
- Ask ChatGPT (with browsing) the same questions. Note whether your site is named, quoted, or silently absorbed.
- Score each article: cited / mentioned-not-cited / ignored. That's your baseline.
Repeat monthly. Models re-crawl and re-rank constantly — a cited article can silently fall out of the answer set.
What separates cited articles from ignored ones
Auditing hundreds of these answers, the pattern is consistent:
- A committed verdict. "The best budget CRM is X because…" gets cited; "here are 10 options, it depends" gets skipped. AI wants a quotable conclusion.
- Concrete, current facts — prices, dates, version numbers. Stale data is a disqualifier answer engines can detect.
- First-hand evidence — original screenshots, test results, and methodology. Answer engines increasingly favor sources that look like primary research, not roundups of roundups.
- Clean structure — a comparison table, a clear winner section, Article and Product schema so the engine can parse claims mechanically.
- Being reachable — not blocked in robots.txt, fast, and readable as plain text (the plain-text rule applies to review content too).
Fixing the ignored articles
Work the list from "mentioned-not-cited" down: those are closest to converting. Add a verdict paragraph AI can quote, refresh the facts, add schema, then re-test in two weeks. For articles that stay ignored, check whether a competitor's post owns the citation — and what it states that yours doesn't.
The manual loop works; it's just tedious at 20 articles × 2 engines × monthly. Scout's scan already grades the site-level fundamentals free — run it on your site — and article-level citation tracking is where our Pro tier is headed. If that's your exact problem, the free scan is the right first baseline.
