Google AI Overviews — the AI-generated answer block above traditional results — now triggers on a growing share of local queries: "best," "cheapest," "is X worth it," "X vs Y," and service questions like "how much does a water heater install cost." When it appears, it sits above the map pack and the blue links you spent years earning.
How Overviews pick local businesses
AI Overviews synthesize from Google's existing local stack plus crawled pages. In practice, the businesses that get named share these traits:
- A strong Google Business Profile — complete categories, current hours, photos, steady reviews. The GBP is the backbone of Google's local understanding; Overviews inherit it.
- Pages that answer the query in text. Overviews quote and cite pages. A page that plainly answers "cost of water heater installation in Austin" (with actual numbers) is quotable; a page of marketing copy is not.
- Consistent facts everywhere. Same NAP story as every other AI channel — Google cross-references, and disagreement drops confidence.
- Schema markup that confirms category, hours, service area, and pricing range.
If this list looks familiar, that's the point: the same fact-hygiene work that fixes ChatGPT answers feeds AI Overviews. One effort, every channel.
The traffic math nobody likes
Overviews answer some questions so completely the customer never clicks — "what time does X open" clicks are gone, and you won't get them back. Your defense is to win the queries where the Overview is a starting point, not the answer: comparisons, "best X in Y", cost questions. There, being the named, cited business converts the query into a call or visit.
So don't fight for the un-clickable queries — make sure the facts they surface are right. Fight for the consideration queries, where a citation is a referral.
The 4-step Overview checklist
- Audit your GBP as if it were your homepage — every field, every week.
- Publish one genuinely useful page per major service that answers cost, scope, and "who is this for" in plain text.
- Add LocalBusiness schema and keep it in lockstep with your GBP.
- Search your money queries monthly and read the Overview: are you named? Cited? Is a competitor? Is anything wrong?
Step 4 is the monitoring habit most owners skip. Scout's free scan covers the AI-answer side in 90 seconds, and the paid plans watch for drift so you find out about a wrong answer from an email, not from a slow month.
